Family Hikes: All you need are some boots and a trail

So yes there is more to exercise than a gym room or an at home work out. The best is actually getting outside and putting your hard work to the test with a nice hike!

One of my favorite things to do is hike. My husband and I use to go hiking when we were dating in high school and it has always been a special hobby we shared together.

Now that we have children we do not let that stop us! We bring those kids right along with us! My favorite weekends are actually where we have nothing planned! We have an entire day to do whatever we want as a family. Our morning consists of packing some snacks, drinks, clothes, strollers and just heading either east or west and from there all we really need is a trail….

Family Hike to Ithaca

Here are a few of our favorite places to hike
Filmlore Glenn: http://nysparks.com/parks/157/
Watkins Glenn: http://nysparks.com/parks/142
Ithaca, NY http://www.ci.ithaca.ny.us/parks/stewartpark.cfm
Bear Swamp: http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/34420.html

We have a “secret” park we take the kids to, where we turn off our cell phones and are just a family….and that my friends, I will keep to myself :)

Sometimes my husband will take it a little to far and I will have to remind him we are hiking with a 1 year old and a 4 year old, but bless his heart you can tell this is certainly in his element and these kids are right behind him and its actually me who is grasping for water or a nice wet stump to take a break!

The best part about New York, in my opinion is there is actually so much more than New York City. When I tell people where I am from they assume I am a city girl….but we tend to forget the beauty that all New York has to offer. Some of the best wineries and parks in the country are actually from the Finger Lakes. Planning a trip with with your spouse? You would be amazed what the Finger Lakes has to offer! http://www.fingerlakes.org/

If you ever have the chance, or a free day to do this…I highly recommend it! Not only are you getting exercise, but you are creating moments with your family that will last a life time. There is something about just getting in a car and not having any plans, especially in the world we live in now where life seems to be planned down to the minute. This is a hobby I really want to pass onto my children. The lifestyle of living a healthy life together.
